Pasture Production Opportunities
Our final Lunch meeting for the year talk will be presented by Dr Kevin Reed, FAIA, Research Scientist. Kevin has worked on grassland survey, agronomy, animal production systems, plant introduction and breeding, grass endophyte-animal interactions and mycotoxins.
He considers that there is considerable opportunity to increase the value of livestock production: Pasture productivity varies widely between farms sharing similar rainfall. Compared with pasture, field crops show a better correlation between production and rainfall. In the high rainfall zone, the potential for lifting production on land supporting poor pasture is considerable. Modelling indicates that the gap in gross margins, between poor and good pasture, will increase with the predicted changes in climate.
Kevin will present his findings at the lunch to be held at the Elgin Inn Hotel.
