Victoria Division Lunch: Better Livelihood Outcomes for Rural Villagers in Lao PDR

Dr John Allen BVSc MBA PhD, Program Leader - Regional Program, CSIRO - Australian Animal Health Laboratory, Geelong Vic., will explain his research that achieved improved pig production, cross border market access; and reduced impact from pig associated zoonotic diseases - using One Health System Approach.

The growing demand for pork in Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, Vietnam and southern China has resulted in a need for:

(i) analysis of market chain opportunities for livelihood improvements in rural Lao villagers; and

(ii) better assessment of the public health risks from pig production systems in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Lao PDR is a significant Southeast Asian ‘transit country’, and has potential to grow and export significant numbers of pigs and pork products across its borders with Thailand and Vietnam.

This study was funded by ACIAR and managed by the Australian Animal Health Laboratory under its Regional Program; and the presentation will describe the integration of market chain analysis with zoonotic disease risk interventions and improved pig production and animal health in two strategic cross border market chains in Lao PDR.

The lunch meeting will be held on Tuesday 4 July 17, 12.00 PM at the Elgin Inn Hotel, 75 Burwood Road, Hawthorn.
