Biodiversity conservation and climate change in Australia
How will climate change affect the distribution and abundance of fauna and flora in Australia? What are the medium and long-term implications for the conservation of Australia’s biodiversity? A brief look at the problem through some case studies reveals some challenges and opportunities.
This month's presenter, Geoff Vincent, Dip. Agr. Sci. (Dookie 1970) will explore the topic. Geoff’s 30-year career in park management began as a Ranger in Kuring-gai Chase National Park near Sydney in 1973. Since then, he has performed various roles in both field and corporate management in park agencies in NSW, South Australia, Victoria and New Zealand, covering the entire spectrum from wilderness to urban park management. As Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Parks Victoria from 1998 to 2007, Geoff was accountable for the policy, planning, establishment, research, conservation, tourism, recreation and asset management programs for Victoria’s parks system, spanning marine and terrestrial protected areas and intensively visited urban parks and waterways. He established his own environmental consulting firm in 2007, servicing clients in Australia and Asia, specialising in the evaluation of management effectiveness, ecological sustainability and the effects of climate change on biodiversity and protected area management.
