Dr Leo Cummins, BSc (Vet), BVSc, MVSc, MACVS, PhD will share his experiences with Beef Cattle twinning following 30 years of animal production research at Hamilton, Victoria. He conducted a major joint project in the 1980's on cattle twinning induced by immunisation or Embryo Transfer. Immunisation was disappointing but ET suggested good possibilities provided twins could be achieved at low cost. Around that time the US Meat Animal Research Centre started its successful twin selection line.
Leo has been farming, beef and sheep, in the region for the last 30 years. He started importing USMARC twinner genetics privately in 2004 and has been working with them as commercial cattle since. While twinners require extra management at calving, many of the other objections to twinning have been shown to be unsubstantiated. These cattle offer the possibility of calving rates of 150% and a whole new paradigm for beef production in better pastoral areas.
