AIA SA: Ag Tech Hackathon

The Ag Tech Hackathon is an event to encourage innovation among undergraduate and postgraduate students. Two workshops will provide training in developing an idea from an initial concept to a commercial reality. The event involves two workshops and a final presentation with the winning team or individual receiving a cash prize and a 6-month incubation period at ThincLab Waite.
While the competition is only open to tertiary students, Institute members can attend the two workshops.

SA Division Dinner Meeting

The SA Division invites members and guests to a dinner meeting with Kate McBride.

The speaker:
Kate McBride is from Tolarno Station, near Menindee in the Western Division of NSW. She is currently completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Adelaide as well as being a Healthy River Ambassador. Kate is a strong advocate for the health of the Darling River and the Murray Darling Basin. She has strong views when it comes to water management and has done talks to schools and community events regarding the Darling River and Menindee lakes.

In 2017 Kate was elected by fellow landholders onto the Western Local Land Services (LLS) Board and is now the youngest board member since the organisation began. Since then Kate has also become chair of the Western Regional Weeds Committee.

Kate and her family were recently featured in an episode of Australian Stories on the ABC.

AIA SA Division Speaker and Networking Event and McColl Award presentation

Graham Page (Thomas Elder Consulting) and Dr John Evans (Thomas Elder Institute) will give short presentations. These will be followed by the announcement of, and presentation to, the winner of the 2018 Jim McColl Young Consultant Award.

An extremely informative evening was enjoyed by nearly 40 AIA members, non-members and students on 18 April. There was great networking in the beautiful Urrbrae House, Waite Campus of the University of Adelaide, bot before and after an absorbing presentation.

SA Division - The Jim McColl Award

Dr Jim McColl, who passed away in 2013, was one of the early pioneers of the private farm consulting movement. He specialised in a whole of farm approach, including business aspects and was highly regarded by clients and colleagues.

The SA Division of Ag Institute Australia in which Jim spent much of his time, believes that it is fitting that his contribution to Australian agriculture be recognised in the long term. The Jim McColl AIA Young Consultant Award recognises the achievements of young consultants, an area in which Jim was passionate to assist in developing and one he would be proud to support.

The AIA held their National Event on the 26th and 27th of May 2016. It included the National Students Awards, a Social Networking Dinner & AGM and South Australian Conference.

AIA South Australian AGM

The South Australia AGM is on Tuesday 17 May, in Urrbrae House, commencing at 5.00 pm.

This is an important event given that we not only hear of our progress in the past 12 months, but also celebrate our colleagues’ achievements with the presentation of awards.

This includes the Jim McColl Award with the McColl family present.

This year there will also be a short presentation by Wayne Meyer/Peter Hayman on the AIA approach to climate change policy.

We will then finish up with a cocktail session where we can network until 7.30 pm.
