National Agriculture Day: a cause for celebration

In recognition of National Agriculture Day, the Ag Institute will be holding events on 20 November 2020.

Whether city or bush-based, Australians are motivated to create a better future for our families and our environment – National Agriculture Day is a celebration of these values which underpin Australian agriculture.


A call for your agricultural photos

We are seeking photos which celebrate Australian agriculture. Your photo may depict (but not limited to):

  • Women and youth in agriculture
  • Sustainable landscapes and changing climates
  • Food and agriculture in a global pandemic


Eligibility: any Australian can enter

  • Entrants can be from anywhere across Australia
  • Entrants can be members or non-members of the Ag Institute Australia
  • Entrants must be individuals, not a company or organisation
  • Closing date: submitted before 11:59pm (AEDT) on 15 November 2020



  • Ag Day Award: Free practitioner equivalent membership for 2021.
  • Second prize: 25% off practitioner equivalent membership for 2021.
  • People’s choice award: to be determined by the audience on 20 November 2020.


Judging process and criteria





Maximum number of points

Creativity and originality

Is the image unique? Is it rehashing a standard photo but from a different angle, revealing something new or does it capture a rarely seen situation?

Storytelling and relevance

Does the photo tell a story? Does the photo effectively convey a message? Is the message relevant to agriculture?

Technical excellence

Has the photographer intentionally incorporated technical aspects to further the image in their vision of the photo, such as correct sharpness and ideal composition?

Degree of difficulty

How hard was it to take the photo? Did the photo’s capture require skill and effort? Could the photo be easily replicated?

A panel of judges will judge each submission against the criteria listed above. The submission which receives the highest number of points will receive the Ag Day Award. The submission which receives the second highest number of points will receive the Second Prize. The top 15 submissions (by points) will be voted on by the audience on National Agriculture Day. The submissions which receives the highest number of votes will receive the People’s Choice Award. The judges will be appointed by the NSW Division. Voting will be conducted via zoom during the industry networking session in the afternoon.


Submission Details

The entry form is available at:

  • Entries submitted after the closing period will not qualify for prizes. 
    • Closing date: 11:59pm (AEDT) on 15 November 2020
  • Entry to the competition is free
    • Accepted image files include: PNG, JPG, JPEG, PDF, TIF
    • Files must be high resolution to allow reproduction in printed format, as well as display on social media platforms (min of 5MB, max 15MB). Low resolution images may not be accepted.
    • Minimum image resolution of 300 dpi and size of 1000 px
    • Must include the title, location where the photo was taken, a brief description less than 280 characters and a summary of the less than 150 words describing the importance and/or impact of the research it relates to. This material may be used in social media and blog posts.
  • Entrants can be members or non-members
  • Entries must be photographic images that relate to Australian agriculture
  • Entries must be the original work of the entrant.
  • Entries that have won awards in other image competitions are not eligible for this Competition
  • Entrants can submit a maximum of three images.

  • Entries must be in accordance with these Terms and Conditions, the instructions set out in this document. By entering the Competition, each entrant agrees to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. Ag Institute Australia may refuse to award any prize to any entrant who fails to comply with these Terms and Conditions.
  • By entering participants give the Ag Institute Australia the non-exclusive licence to use or reproduce the entry and any personal details provided in any social media or print media for promotional, marketing or publicity purposes without notice or fee. Your photo will always be credited to you.
  • Ag Institute Australia takes no responsibility for any entries that are lost, delayed, or misdirected.
  • The winners for each category will be publicly announced on the 20th of November at the Ag day event, notified by email and on social media.
  • The Ag Institute Australia reserves the right to not give an award.
  •          The winners of prizes will be contacted by the Ag Institute Australia through their provided email.
